Nikki D. Hill, MD, FAAD
I am a Dermatologist and Hair Loss Specialist. If a hair is in the growth or rest phase (anagen or catagen) it will be tightly anchored in the follicle. Tearing a hair from the follicle can cause damage and create an immune response that, if too great, may lead to scarring which will obliterate the follicle. The process of repetitively pulling out one's hair is trichotillomania. Hair being pulled out by force is called traction alopecia, which may lead to permanent hair loss if traumatic enough.
